Local Leyva Top Olympic Qualifier in Men’s Gymnastics

South Florida Sun Sentinel: Danell Leyva moved one step closer to an Olympic gold medal on Saturday when he finished as the top individual qualifier in the men’s gymnastics field.

The top 24 gymnasts, with no more than two per country, advance to the men’s individual all-around final, and Leyva’s first-place finish comes after winning the U.S. Olympic trials last month.

Leyva, who was born in Cuba, came to the United States with his mother and sister prior to his second birthday. He trains at Universal Gymnastics in Miami, which is owned by his mother, Maria Gonzalez, and his stepfather, Yin Alvarez.
